It is located 408 kilometers northeast of Lima. It is a long narrow alluvial valley of the Andes (Ancash, Peru) and is about 180 kilometers long, from Lake Conococha 4,000 m. to the Del Pato.Canyon¨.
This region comprised the provinces of Recuay, Huaraz, Carhuaz, Yungay and Huaylas and territory includes altitude ranges from 1,000 to 6,768 meters. There are many cities with their own characteristics, which are aligned as follows (from south to north): Cátac (3,500 m), Recuay (3,400 m), Huaraz (3,090 m), Carhuaz (2,650 m), Yungay (2,500 m) and Caraz (2,290 m).
This valley is in the midst of the Cordillera Negra to the west and the Cordillera Blanca or Yurak Janka (in the Quechua language), to the east , it is “The highest Tropical Mountain Range in the world”, with altitudes greater than 6,000 meters above sea level covered with ice and snow peaks, being the highest mountain of Perú the Huascaran (6768 m) while Cordillera Negra has mountains up to 5,100 meters, which are characterized by not presenting snow.
Huaraz is the largest city, is the capital of the Ancash region, the center axis of regional trade and tourism, especially adventure sports (Adventure Tourism). It is the favorite area for climbers, hikers, athletes, scientists and peace lovers.
