From Montaña Jazz you can go north and take the road to Llanganuco in Yungay. The trip takes about 1 hour. (48.4 km). Most of the travel agencies in Huaraz make this circuit. The road passes through several communities of the upper area of Yungay and finally reaches the Huascaran National Park. At the park entrance, there is a checkpoint where it is necessary to register and make a payment. This road is located in a narrow glacial valley of beautiful landscapes between the impressive snow-capped mountains of Huascaran (6768m) and Huandoy (south peak 6160m). Queñual forests, alder, and waterfalls of pure and crystalline water are the perfect setting to feel in a paradise in the middle of the Andes.
In order to closely observe nature you can make a walk of approximately 1 km. by Maria Josefa trail. You must take into account that the Llanganuco gorge is at 3800 m.
In the foothills of snow-capped Huascaran we can see the beautiful glacial lakes of Chinancocha (female lake) and Orconcocha (male lake). Both lakes have been formed due to melting of the mountains of Huascaran, Huandoy, Pisco, Yanapaccha and Chopicalqui where the water temperature has an average of 7 ° C on the surface and -3 ° C in the depth.
The first lake, Chinancocha, is the most visited by tourists. It has a beautiful turquoise color it is 1450 meters long and 393 meters width and 28 meters depth. Here you can find boat services, restrooms and a small restaurant. All this is managed by the Rural Community of Humachucco where they offer a delicious quinoa hot drink with pineapple, crunchy fried pork and the inevitable coca tea for altitude sickness.
